Institutional Review Board

<p>This is the last email for today. I promise! We thought that separate emails would be better than one huge long one.</p> <p>During fall or spring semester next academic year, we would like you to implement a bean beetle experiment in one of your classes and assess your students using a pre-test/post-test format. We will provide the exam in an online format. This might need to be reviewed by your Institutional Review Board (IRB). We will discuss this in more detail at the workshop. However, before the workshop, please determine whether your institution has an IRB and basic information on how to submit a proposal to them. The pre-test/post-test have already been approved by the Emory and Morehouse IRBs. In some cases, your IRB might just want to see a copy of the approval from Emory or Morehouse. In other cases, you might need to submit a proposal. We would provide the information for this. Bean Beetle Bibliography

<p>In order to get familiar with the research on physiology and neuroscience related to bruchid beetles, we ask each participant to contribute two references to our bean beetle literature database for physiology and neuroscience. The references do not need to be on <i>Callosobruchus maculatus</i> or even on the genus <i>Callosobruchus</i>, but they should be on a species within the family Bruchidae.</p> <p>You can find the database at <a href="http://www.beanbeetles.org/network/ref/">http://www.beanbeetles.org/network/ref/</a>. Each of you has an account for accessing the database to add new references. To login, use your email address and the password "beanbeetle". You can change the password once you login. Once you login, you can add references by clicking on "Add Record" at the top and entering the information manually. Alternatively (and preferably), you can click on "Import" and put either the PubMed ID (PMID) or DOI for the reference in the "Import IDs" field and click Import. This will automatically import all of the necessary information. Bean Beetle Workshop Information

<p>Dear All,</p> <p> Now that our semesters are complete, Larry and I are busy finalizing the details of the bean beetle workshop. Over the next several days, you will be receiving a series of about 5 different emails with additional information about the workshop or tasks that need to be completed before arriving on June 2.</p> <p>We will begin with a dessert reception in room 231 of the 1462 Clifton Rd. Bldg. at 8pm on June 2. For those staying on campus, either Larry or I will meet you outside of the residence hall at 7:45pm to accompany you to the room. For local participants, you can park in the Michael St. parking deck and walk to the room. The housing information from conference services, workshop schedule, and a campus map are attached and will be posted to the workshop discussion board.</p> <p>Below is a recap of travel information. Based on comments from last year's participants, if you are staying on campus, please remember to bring soap and shampoo. Also, if you prefer a large, luxurious bath towel, you are better off bringing your own. There is wireless internet access available in the on-campus housing. However, last year, the participants found that the internet connectivity was better with an ethernet cable. You do NOT need to bring a computer with you, as you will have access to computers during our working sessions, but you are more than welcome to bring one along.</p> <p>Once arriving at the Atlanta airport, you can either take an airport shuttle (about $35 on <a href="http://www.atlsuperiorshuttle.com/" target="_blank">Atlanta Superior Shuttle</a>) or taxi (approximately $40) from the airport to Emory. If you are arriving with your partner, taking a taxi will be cheaper. Taxis do take credit cards, but you need to tell them in advance at the airport. You will be staying in the Sorority Complex on Eagle Row, on Emory's main campus. However, you need to check in with Conference Services at Alabama Hall (1615 Pierce Drive, NE) first. If you have trouble finding Conference Services, just call them at 404-727-0427.
